What Is The Fault in Our Stars?
The Fault in Our Stars is about a 16 year- old girl named Hazel Grace Lancaster. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 Thyroid cancer when she was 13 and has metastasis forming in her lungs. Because of this she is forced to carry around an oxygen tank everywhere she goes. This obviously stinks, especially for a teenager. What stinks even more though is that her mom makes her join a support group. One day she meets a guy named Augustus Waters (a boy who also has cancer) at her support group. They immediately fall in love. Throughout the book Hazel and Augustus go through some ups and downs together while trying to fight off their cancer. However, Augustus teaches her that you can still have a good life, even if it may be a short life.
What inspired him to write the book?
The Fault in Our Stars was actually inspired by the true, yet tragic, story of Esther Earl. Esther lost her 4 year battle with thyroid cancer when she was 16. John met her at a Harry Potter convention (of all places). It turned out she was a huge fan of John and his brother's video blog. They became really good friends really quickly. After her death, heartbroken, John Green wrote The Fault in Our Stars. The main character, Hazel Grace, came from his close relationship with Esther. Two years after publishing the book, John helped Esther's parents write This Star Won't Go Out: The Life and Words of Esther Grace Earl.
